Slide Pendant/Telescoping Rivet Tutorial

This lesson will teach you how to create a pendant that will easily slide onto any chain, including large omega chains. Using basic metalsmithing techniques, a pendant will be formed from sterling silver with a gemstone bead accent using a telescoping rivet. (copper sheet can be substituted)

STAMPING TUTORIAL

This tutorial shows how to use inexpensive ‘tools’, by modifying items found mostly in your own home, to stamp patterns onto metal to create a scenic pendant similar to the one on the left. Your imagination will ultimately determine what your pendant looks like!

There are 34 steps, 48 photos, and various tips inserted throughout 15 pages.


This tutorial uses the most basic fold forming technique, line folds, and takes the technique into 3 different directions for 3 projects in one.

This lesson shows how to create folds in metal in order to create dimension and texture in your work. We will look at three different projects which take the fold formed metal in very different directions. You will learn to use the inherent properties of metal to your advantage - Work hardness becomes your friend!

Your imagination will ultimately determine what your pieces look like!

Materials:
Sheet metal - 24 gauge (your choice of maetal), Copper wire (16 gauge or larger), 10-12 gauge wire (metal of your choice - for ring).

Tools:
Ballpein hammer, Riveting hammer (or hammer with a narrow face), Rawhide or rubber mallet, Vise, Bench block or anvil, Bench pin, Ring mandrel, Metal scissors or shears, Files (large and needle), Sandpaper (coarse and fine), Ring clamp or holding pliers, Drill and drill bit, Pliers – flat
Non-serrated knife/bench knife, Sharpie, Ruler, Torch (butane or jewelers), Fire resistant surface (solderite board, charcoal block, annealing pan, tripod, etc)
Water in small bowl, Towel, Liver of sulphur or liquid black (or other patina agent), Flux, Pickle (commercial or home made mix – instructions included), Third hand (recommended, but optional)
